「車」は日常語では”car”と言うのが一般的ですが、”automobile”と言ったり、”motor vehicle”と言うこともできるので、「自動車～」と言う場合は”car ～”、”automobile ～”、”motor vehicle ～”という表現になることが多いです。
まず、自動車税は都道府県が、軽自動車税は市区町村が課税する地方税です。例えば、東京都、大阪府、沖縄県は自動車税を”motor vehicle tax”、埼玉県や群馬県は”automobile tax”と呼んでいます。軽自動車税は、福岡市、大阪市などが”light vehicle tax”、横浜市、名古屋市では”light motor vehicle tax”という訳を使用しています。各都道府県や市区町村によって、英語での表記は異なりますが、どの言い方でも伝わるでしょう。
”compulsory automobile liability insurance”（自賠責保険）の”compulsory”は「強制的な、義務的な、必須の」という形容詞です。反対に”voluntary automobile insurance”（任意保険）の”voluntary”は「自発的な、任意の」という意味があります。
「ガソリン」はアメリカ英語では”gasoline”、略式では”gas”と言うのですが、イギリス英語圏では”petrol”と言うので覚えておきましょう。
「車検」は”automobile inspection”や”automobile safety inspection”と言い、”inspection”は「点検、検査」という名詞です。そこに料金を意味するfeeをつけて「車検費用」となります。ちなみに、イギリスでは3年以上経過した車に義務付けられている年次検査を、”MOT test”や”MOT”と呼びます。
駐車場代の「駐車場」はアメリカ英語では”parking lot”、イギリス英語では”car parking”と言いますが、単に”parking”でもOKです。
